About the Role:

Public Safety works in partnership with students, faculty and staff to create and maintain a safe, secure and stable environment for living, learning and working. Since our department is a 24/7/365 operation, the college community counts on Public Safety to be visible and service oriented while performing their duties and responsibilities. On a daily basis you will interact with a diverse and caring community who take pride in St. Olaf and the mission of a liberal arts institution.

The shift is 5:00 p.m. – 3:00 a.m., with an eight (8) week cycle consisting of 4 days on, 4 days off, 4 days on, 3 days off, 5 days on, 3 days off (x3), 5 days on, 4 days off, 4 days on, 3 days off. You must be available 24/7 on an on-call basis for emergencies.

What You’ll Do:
As a Public Safety Sergeant, you are the first line supervisor who oversees Public Safety Officers. Public Safety Officers are responders to incidents and accidents occurring on campus property. They conduct investigations, write incident reports, respond to medical related emergencies, investigate intrusion and fire alarms, provide transports to the hospital for minor illnesses and injuries and work with local police, fire and emergency medical services. They also patrol all campus property to prevent and detect criminal or unacceptable behavior, enforce parking regulations, provide security services to the campus, respond to calls for service, provide security for special events, engage in crime prevention efforts and assist in new officer training and orientation.
In addition to performing the roles of a Public Safety Officer, the Public Safety Sergeant also supervises the night shift Public Safety team and oversees the field training program along with additional administrative tasks.

Who You Are:
You’re a great fit if you have…
An associate’s degree, or relevant work experience; 1+ year of experience in a security or law enforcement role; experience in customer service, community engagement or volunteer work; maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record; and you genuinely enjoy helping people

A helpful background includes:
A bachelor’s degree in related field; 3+ years of experience in a security or law enforcement role, with at least 1 year in a leadership capacity
