About the Role:
Are you an emerging museum professional looking to make an impact? Your contribution to our team will be to research and describe the College Archives’ 3-D object and textile collections as part of an MNHS grant to make these materials discoverable and available to researchers ahead of the College’s sesquicentennial. This is a 12-month term position beginning January 1, 2023, through December 31, 2023.
What You’ll Do:
• Create original descriptions of the 3D objects, textiles, and artworks in the St. Olaf Archives’ collections in accordance Collective Access input standards and national standards such as CCO and RDA
• Create and review metadata for digital images of 3D objects, textiles and artworks for inclusion in the College’s digital access management system
• Assists in the review and maintenance of the data in Collective Access, including the creation and editing of name and place authorities
• Advise on conservation strategies and priorities as necessary
• Create and edit object cataloging documentation
Who You Are:
You’re a great fit if you have:
• Bachelor’s degree in Humanities; graduate education in Art History, Museum Studies, or Library Science
• Paid or unpaid experience in a museum, archive, or library setting, with targeted experience in creating metadata for 3D objects or other museum collections, or relevant experience.
• Creativity with a deep curiosity and unerring attention to detail.
• Knowledge and experience creating structured metadata for use in collection management systems
• Experience using content standards and controlled vocabularies typically used for describing artworks, textiles and 3D objects, such as CCO, CDWA, or VRA Core
A helpful background includes:
• Master’s degree in Art History, Museum Studies, or Library and Information Science, or demonstrated equivalency through experience and training.
• 1+ years of professional experience (or extensive volunteer experience) working in a museum setting with a focus on collections processing and cataloging
